Hello! I had to leave Ada on the shelf for 16 years now for work. Unfortunately I was let go from that job, and I’m looking to get back into Ada, in some fashion. I have a few questions that I hope people here can help with.

If I were to apply for embedded jobs that use Ada, is there some kind of certification I could get to show I know Ada well enough? I’ve already contacted AdaCore and they do not offer certification. A couple of colleges near me offer Embedded Development classes at the Master’s level but course prerequisites exist, and my transcripts are ancient. I’d probably be looking at paying A LOT of money.

Another question I have, unrelated to certification, comes from a comment made by an Ada developer many years ago. For a short while I participated in the very first discussions of the AdaOS project. Back then, a comment was made, that I only partially remember. Someone had said something like, “…because the operating system isn’t written in Ada”.

It wasn’t until I became unemployed, and started thinking about Ada, that this came to mind for some odd reason. And I don’t even remember the whole statement, or question it answered! It is driving me NUTS!

If anyone could help make sense of that statement, that’d be great! I’m assuming that answer was given to a question about compilers on PC. On PC, don’t Ada compilers output C? Maybe this is what it addresses.

Anyway…apparently I have a lot to relearn.

Any recommendations on hard copy books to update my knowledge of Ada? How about books on the topic of using Ada for Embedded Systems? Thanks.

Hi @azcromntic!

welcome back and welcome to the forums! AFAIK, there is no formal certification. There are industry codes/certifications, but none are Ada related. In terms of embedded knowledge/training, there are many such courses (free and paid, with paid being the only one that would give you some kind of certification), but probably none use Ada, as they will most likely use C/C++.

Most employees, afaik, care more about years of experience rather than any kind of certification. Some will probably be willing to pay for it if you show enough experience and pass the first few “trial months”.

I cannot help you with AdaOS sadly, as I had never heard of it.

One very nice resource to start getting back with Ada/SPARK is [https://learn.adacore.com/](https://learn.adacore.com/) It even has a specific section for embedded devices: [Introduction to Embedded Systems Programming - learn.adacore.com](https://learn.adacore.com/courses/intro-to-embedded-sys-prog/index.html) and for C/C++ and Java programmers, in case your knowledge lives there.

I hope this helps. Best regards,
Fer

Ah yes the ada os project. I thought it a laudable aim. Maybe we should just get the github going and make a start and see if anyone joins us . I’ve already got a gloriously impossible project in my Multics conversion to Ada underway (its about 4 per cent done - but I did attack in a difficult area) but that will never finish, I dont think it can, but it is teaching me much.
