Discussion: should Ada have its own FOSDEM DevRoom?

@DirkCraeynest ?

Further update (copied from AdaFOSDEM mailing list): we got a half-day DevRoom, provisionally scheduled on Sunday morning February 2, 2025.

Some extra context provided by the FOSDEM organizers:

ā€œNote we received far more proposals (124) than we can accommodate, so unfortunately we had to leave out a number of good proposals, […]. This also means that some people will have only half a day even though they have requested a full day. This mail also contains a proposed allocation per day. Please check if this is ok for you or if you would like to switch asap, so we can make some small changes before publishing this list on the website.ā€

Should we try to switch to Saturday afternoon, for example to better accommodate potential presenters from across the Atlantic (both for travel and jet-lag reasons)?

Dirk

To access the AdaFOSDEM mailing list archives, you need to log in with the same email address that you are subscribed with.

FWIW, among the 77 current subscribers I can’t find anyone matching ā€œlukeā€ or ā€œlucretiaā€. What’s the e-mail address you used? Feel free to send me a DM at Dirk.Craeynest@cs.kuleuven.be, and I’ll investigate further.

I have the same problem, I’ve DM’d you too.

I responded to both DMs, and have added the e-mail address of both of you to the AdaFOSDEM mailing list.

Note that anyone who would be interested to join that list can do so by registering via the web interface.

I used the web interface, doesn’t seem to work if two people did that and it didn’t work.

Apparently, the rules changed slightly since I last looked…

First you need to register the password you want to use for your email address.
After login, select the AdaFOSDEM list and on that page subscribe via the pull-down menu in the upper-right corner.

I just did that for an alternative address without any problem…

I think it wouldn’t hurt to ask if anyone with Saturday afternoon is willing to switch with us.
(Though I will be traveling across the Atlantic, I’m arriving on Thursday and staying well after the conference so I’m personally fine with Sunday morning though).

To be fair, there is usually an Ada Dinner on Saturday. If we get the afternoon slot we could all go together afterwards to wherever we dine  Though this is just a minor perk of being in the afternoon.

Ug… I just started reading the emails… I had read Saturday instead of Sunday (since I asked for Saturday I did not think we would be scheduled for Sunday). I do agree to ask for a Saturday afternoon slot if possible. I will keep reading the emails to see what other managers said.

Best,
Fer

Edit: I saw that most rooms accepted their time slot and there have been a couple that have already asked to be on Saturday instead of Sunday… I think it is best to leave it as is. It does not seem likely that we will get a change approved. I think Sunday morning should be fine  (plust this allows anybody to go and get tipsy on Friday evening :P)

Welp, I do not know wtf happened, but I just received the email @DirkCraeynest sent to the FOSDEM devroom organisers ML. Maybe it had to be whitelisted? Anyhow… just saying. I think we won’t have such a luxury, there does not seem to be many devrooms open for a change.

Looks like it. I sent the request shortly after @AJ-Ianozi supported asking for it, but my mail seems to have been delayed a long time…

We most probably won’t get a Sat afternoon slot, though. Anyway, a Sun morning Ada DevRoom is better than none!
