I’m pleased to announce the release of bbt 0.5.0, the Ada behaviour-driven testing tool for command-line applications.
This version marks an important milestone: the initial functional goals of the project have now been achieved. bbt can test most interactions between a CLI application and its environment, including:
- file inputs and outputs,
- standard output and standard error,
- environment variables,
- interactive user input from the keyboard.
What’s new
Interactive input assertions
CLI keyboard interactions are now directly testable with new assertions such as When I type "Y" or When I enter "Yes"
Numerous fixes and improvements
This release also includes many bug fixes, refinements and quality-of-life improvements. See the complete changelog here: Changelog
What’s next?
Now that the original functional scope has been reached, future work will focus on improving the user experience and bug fixing across the three currently supported platforms.
Work has already started on the next development cycle (currently available as the development branch), which introduces utilities to neutralize environment-dependent values commonly found in test outputs, such as:
- timestamps and time tags,
- platform-specific paths.
These features should help make tests more portable and less sensitive to execution environments.
And, under the hood, process handling has been migrated from Spawn to ada-util, resulting in a major performance improvement.
bbt 0.5.0 is available through Alire, and the latest development version can be obtained here
But the easiest way to start is to make your AI aware of bbt
