ANN : Lithophane 1.0.0

# [ANN] Lithophane 1.0.0 – turn your pictures into 3D-printable lithophanes

Hello everyone,

I am thrilled to announce the first release of lithophane (1.0.0), a small command-line tool written in Ada 2022, which transforms any picture into a lithophane you can print on your 3D printer.

A lithophane is a delicate slab whose thickness corresponds to the intensity of the image. When illuminated, it reveals an image.

Features

  • Many input formats: PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, TGA… thanks to GID by @zertovitch
  • Several output formats: binary STL, ASCII STL and 3MF (watertight mesh, with real physical dimensions in millimetres)
  • Image filters applied before meshing: `bartlett`, `gauss`, `square`, `sharpen` (configurable kernel size)
  • Adjustable relief: height, border, grey-level threshold, maximum image size
  • TOML configuration file to keep your favourite settings

Getting started

alr get lithophane
cd lithophane
alr build
bin/lithophane --filter gauss 5 --save-3mf --dimensions=100x0x2 my_picture.png

Run bin/lithophane --help for the full list of options, or see the README.

Thanks to @zertovitch for GID, which does all the heavy lifting on the image decoding side.
