I’ve just published an article on dev.to about README Driven Development—but for the most part, it’s a practical demonstration of bbt, an app written in Ada.
The idea is to spark some interest in an Ada-based tool outside our usual circles. (And yes, the word “Ada” is intentionally left out of the article to focus on the tool’s value.)
If you have a moment to like the article—or even better, share your thoughts or feedback (here or on dev.to)—I’d really appreciate it!
Long ago (probably the early 1980s) I read an article on software development that advocated writing the user manual first. README Driven Development sounds very similar. In a Unix context, one could also use “man page”.
Yes, it’s very similar.
But writing a user manual is intimidating, writing a README is a much more acceptable first step
As for Readme Driven Development, I haven’t done any research, but the authorship of the acronym seems to be attributed to one of the creators of GitHub. Maybe he just wanted to reduce the number of dead projects on GitHub that don’t have a single line of documentation to make them usable.
It was back in 2010, but I don’t think he really claimed to be inventing anything — except the acronym, maybe!
