Which Path 's are necessary for GNAT studio?

I installed gnatstudio 2026.2 I got the start screen in which I saw the message “Loading Python plugins…” then the program stopped. I tried the version 26w also with the same result. I use Windows 11. On anorher system I found the version 26w running correctly.

On my computer the gnatstudio.exe file is located on C:\GNAT\gnatstudio\bin Possibly the path’s are not correct, which path’s I should have? I do have “C:\GNAT\gnatstudio” and “C:\GNAT\gnatstudio\bin”.

Wait till first run completes… It can take a time - Python compile everything at first start, and reuse precompiled files later.

If it were Python alone. Unfortunately it also starts g++ and dozens other processes. I posted here Windows event log some months ago.

It is very sad that the best ever IDE (not just Ada, but also for C/C++) is in such disrepair for so long.

A lesson or rather banality for software engineers: do not use Python, ever; do not start a process where a library call would do the job.

The combination of both is a catastrophe because Python is single-threaded and tons of garbage processes are started and crash while awaited per timeout, all successively.

I think I was not clear enough. The python remark is during starting gnatstudio and before it possible to even choosing the project I want to use so even the “HelloWorld” program can not be seen. The program stops without even showing some error message. I just tried to see what the program does. It has a lot of python files that in allmost certainly be used by the gnatstudio program.

This is not directly related to the OP’s problem but when I run the latest GnatStudio, on Arch linux, it constantly consumes 100% of a thread even when idle. Each additional instance fully consumes another thread. I love GnatStudio and have used it exclusively for the past 20 years or more. I’m talking about the latest binary release version for Linux. The native build for Arch linux crashes on startup, with an indecipherable backtrace. No disrespect intended to Adacore but I think Dmitry’s comment nails it …

I just looked if gnatstudio was still running in the background but it was not. this means that something is wrong with the program. As t the version 26w was running correct and when I unstall it again it also crashes in the same way I suspect that something is wrong now in my windows. most likely some Path any where. Therefor this original question: Which Path’s I need?

At this moment paralel I try to install the way via Virtual Studio. If anybody can give me hints, please do.

Uninstall previous GNAT Studio

Remove %USERPROFILE%\.gnatstudio directory.

Install in C:\GNATSTUDIO\

Run it by icon on desktop, to be sure working directory is same as install directory.

Share log files if you have trobles (see %USERPROFILE%\.gnatstudio\logs directory).

I did just what you suggested but the problem stays the same.

I can’t find log files…

During use I sometimes get one core running at 8% constantly but a restart of gnat studio solves it and it just means the fans are running a little faster otherwise. I’m on OpenSUSE Leap 16 which is a stable system so it’s possible that problems come from some newer packages but I would have thought more complaints would have been heard if others were having issues with arch as it’s quite popular despite Arch being one of the most often broken OS I have ever used personally (partly due to me always applying updates on release day but also some clear incompetence, though it was many years ago).

@charlie5 I assume it still happens if you remove .gnatstudio?

@bertus.dries : Do you have Gnat Studio logs to provide?

The logs are in C:\<user>\ .gnatstudio\log Though there is no useful information there. You need to enable process creation audit:

to see the processes GPS spawns upon start and upon each right mouse button click (context menu).
